Filed under: Pine Nut Harvest and Species Information — pinenut @ 04:34:13 am

We at Goods From The Woods have tried pine nuts from all over the world!! Most people like the Jumbo Nevada in shell pine nuts the best. Me too! This year there was no Nevada harvest and we used our expertice to find the best, sweetest pine nuts from around the globe. We located a company with extra large, roasted, in shell pine nuts and obtained them. This is why we are the only company in the United States offering in shell roasted pine nuts.

New Mexico Pinon Nuts and Jumbo Inshell roasted
We are the ONLY people on the internet with New Mexico Pinon Nuts and we also have jumbo, in shell roasted pine nuts.

These pine nuts have the taste of New Mexico Pinon Pine Nut and the Jumbo size of the Nevada pinyon. We do have 500 lbs New Mexico Pinon coming in, but it is from 2006 and the pricing is outragous ($14.95 for 8 oz). The inshell roasted pine nuts range from $9.95 lb to $6.50 lb depending upon quanity. Our in shell roasted pine nuts are a great value for everyone.

Roasted In Shell Pine Nuts - Season arrives!

Filed under: Pine Nut Harvest and Species Information — pinenut @ 07:35:52 am

I have been on pines and needles, the last three weeks - awaiting pine nut harvest news. Finally, finally we have pine nuts. I tried this pine nut about a year ago and it is unlike any of the other pine nuts I have ever had. They are huge, perfectly roasted, lightly salted and PRE CRACKED.Plus, our pricing is excellent - 100 lbs @$7.25 lb. 10 lbs for $$9.95. So much better than $24.95 lb, what a relief!!!

Pine Season is upon us- roasted pinons are different from these, pre-cracked jumbo pine nuts
Awesome size, fabulous flavor, this 2007 pine nut species is the best roasted nut I have ever have.

I love fresh P. Monophylla, sweet, juicy and crisp. I like the P.Edulis, rich and buttery, but the hard shell and cracking drives me hummm....nuts. These new pine nuts are like the best of all worlks, perfectly roasted, lightly salted, 2007 harvest, fresh as can be with all the buttery flavor of P.Edulis without any of the shelling difficulties.
One of our goals is to get these out in retail stores because most people have never, ever had any pine nut fixed like this. Here is to a good pine nut season and great nuts!

Picking Pinon Nuts in New Mexico

Filed under: Pine Nut Harvest and Species Information — pinenut @ 09:40:58 am

One of the most frequent questions we get is where to go to pick pinon. This article is from 2004 but it offers some information.

Mount Taylor Ranger District Timber Sales Specialist Don Olson said the pinon pine cones generally opened last week because of favorable weather conditions, which, in turn, kicked off the pinon nut gathering season.

Olson said pinon seeds are in a lot of areas in the Mount Taylor Ranger District, but pinon pine trees are not over the entire district.

Pinon pickers seem to be a family event enjoyed by Native American families, and, pinon gathering is also a tradition of the Hispanic people, Olson said.

There are no special permits needed to gather the nuts, however, Olson said pinon gathering on national forest lands is limited to non-commercial ventures. The same rule stands for Bureau of Land Management property. On National Monument lands Field Law Enforcement Ranger Tony Troxel said pinon gathering is permitted, but with limits. As with other federal lands, commercial pinon gathering ventures are not allowed. However, the personal limit is generous. "You can only pick pinon nuts for yourself, and you are allowed 10 pounds of pinon seeds per day, per person," Troxel said, adding that persons picking wild berries are allowed one-quarter of a pound of berries per day, per person.

The pinenut gathering season begins in late summer and ends in the fall. Olson said the pinon nut gathering season usually ends with the first snowfall.

Pine Nut Processing From The Prime Oriental Commodity Company

The fact that most 99% pine nuts in US markets come from China. We need to know how the food gets from the forest to our local grocery. I asked a gentleman who has more than 20 years of history with pine nut processing in China to help me understand how the pine nut is handled from the tree to us. I will do post a seperate entry on this.
I really like the company. They are handling different pine nut species understanding the differences in those species. http://www.ruihuafoods.com/en/JS.asp
Maybe one day we can offer their open shell nuts.
